DISPLACED students of Tayud Elementary School in Barangay Tayud, Consolacion are attending classes in a covered court after 14 classrooms were destroyed by fire last Sunday dawn.
Engineer Ester Roldan, project development officer of the provincial Department of Education (DepEd) office, said the complex is a better option compared to tents.

“The area is covered compared to tents. The students are more comfortable than staying outside because of heat,” Roldan told Cebu Daily News.

The 14 classrooms consisted of rooms for kindergarten and Grades one, two and three students.

Roldan said these classrooms are more than 50 years old.
Initial investigation by the Consolacion Fire Station showed that an overheated electric fan from Grade 3 classroom caused the fire.

The fire station received the alarm at 1:15 a.m. on Sunday and neighboring towns sent fire trucks to put out the fire which died down at 3 a.m. Property destruction was pegged at P200,000.

“Even before, these classrooms had been recommended for demolition and new classrooms built,” Roldan said.

The provincial DepEd office lobbied for construction of two school buildings that can house 16 to 20 classrooms each.

Tayud Elementary School has 2,000 students but Roldan said she still has to finalize how many students were affected by the fire.
