Cebu City’s bars and similar establishments that serve liquor to their clientele were reminded anew to comply with all requirements on or before the April 20 deadline.
Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, deputy mayor for police matters, said the city government will enforce existing laws and ordinances especially those prohibiting the sale and consumption of liquor by minors.
“We received a complaint. A 14-year old went on a drinking spree inside a bar along Banilad. There were other minors inside and this parent was concerned about the incident. Minors are not allowed inside bars, no selling of cigarettes. This is a warning,” he said.
He said as of now, 60 percent of all these establishments in the city have not renewed their business permits.
After the deadline, an inspection will be conducted.
If the establishments fail to comply with the requirements, they will face penalties, Tumulak said.
Ordinance No. 1413 or the Ordinance Pertaining to Liquor states that liquor shall be sold or served only to persons 21 years of age or over. In case of doubt, the establishment shall demand proof of age.
The ordinance also states that in the event the provisions are violated, the offense will be punishable by a fine of at least P1,000 or imprisonment of at least six months or both depending on the court’s discretion.
Tumulak said he can also endorse an outlet’s closure to Mayor Tomas Osmeña.
“We are getting ready because there are no classes and we can expect that these minors will try to enter bars and these establishments might offer the minors liquor,” Tumulak said.
He said establishments should also comply with existing sanitary requirements and their food handlers and servers should have health cards.
The area where the food is being prepared must be clean, Tumulak said.
“There is no need for us to send them a letter because they know when the deadline is. They are mandated to renew,” the councilor said.
Tumulak said they will inspect these establishments afterward to see if they have complied with the city’s requirements.
