PBA gives way to Gilas preparation

Cebu Daily News January 30,2014 - 11:21 PM

WITH THE CLAMOR to give the Gilas Pilipinas national basketball squad ample preparation time for the 2014 Fiba World Cup in Spain, the PBA has agreed to compress the current season and end it a month earlier.
According to several online reports, a board resolution has been agreed upon to shorten the league’s last two conferences during the PBA Board meeting yesterday at the league’s office.
This development is a refreshing piece of news for the Gilas as this allows them to practice as a complete team starting on July 15, a month earlier than the original schedule.
The practice time is needed for the wards of head coach Chot Reyes as they gear up for the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea as well as the World Cup.
Under the resolution, the league agreed to shorten the finals series of both the Commissioner’s and Governor’s Cup from the usual best-of-seven format to a best-of-five series.
Also, the opening of the league’s 2014-2015 season has been moved to Oct. 19 to allow the Nationals to play in the quadrennial Asian Games. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
