Hontiveros says country’s team in Asean Basketball League interested in his services
Cebuano veteran swingman Dondon Hontiveros’ playing years may be getting an extension real soon as he admitted to getting feelers to join the Asean Basketball League’s Alab Pilipinas.
Speaking from the lifestyle and basketball boutique, Common Ground, the 40-year-old swingman bared that Alab Pilipinas team manager Jimmy Alapag has gotten in touch with him regarding a possible stint with the team, whose campaign begins in November.
“Jimmy has talked to me about it but there’s nothing definite,” said the decorated perimeter sniper who had his father and wife by his side. “Right now, I’m just enjoying a little time off from basketball.”
Hontiveros played his final PBA game for Alaska last Wednesday, which was an 82-112 loss to Rain or Shine. He played for 17 years in the PBA.
Hontiveros paid a visit to the practice of his alma mater, the University of Cebu (UC), where he gave an inspirational talk to the Webmasters.
Hontiveros, who has held basketball camps all over the country, said that he wouldn’t rule out any possible coaching opportunities should they be offered to him.
“Anytime I can give back to the game and help out players with the experiences I’ve had through the years, I’ll do it,” said Hontiveros.
Talks are ripe regarding TNT Katropa’s interest in tapping Hontiveros for the upcoming playoff run. But Hontiveros clarified that he has not heard anything about it from his agent.
“Wala pa eh. But I’m not sure if talks are ongoing with my agent since the deadline for picking up players for the playoffs is on Sept. 25,” he said.
