About 50 local governments and police units were given recognition during the annual Sugbo Kontra Droga (Sukod) ceremony by the Cebu Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Office (CPADAO) yesterday.

In the city category, Naga City’s anti-drug abuse council (CADAC) was declared the grand champion, besting five component cities under Cebu province.

Ranked next to Naga City were Bogo City and Danao City at second and third place, respectively.

Danao topped last year’s event while Bogo City became the first city in Central Visayas to have all barangays declared drug-free by the Cebu Oversight Committee on Illegal Drugs.

Naga City’s CADAC received the top P200,000 cash prize while Bogo City received P150,000 and Danao City got P100,000.

Bogo City’s Police Office headed by Supt. Byron Allatog was the top performing police office in Cebu.

Bogo City’s police recently gained international attention after the US-based daily The Washington Post lauded their efforts in conducting a “bloodless” war against illegal drugs.

Bogo City Police Station was followed by Danao City Police Office at second place and Carcar City Police Office at third place.

In the town level, Liloan town’s anti-drug council topped 11 other towns. They were followed by San Remigio in second place and Consolacion at third.

The Consolacion Municipal Police Office was the top performer followed by the San Remigio police and Liloan police.

CPADAO chief Carmen Remedios “Ivy” Meca said yesterday’s awarding ceremony, held at the Grand Convention Center in Barangay Luz, Cebu City, served as a testament of cooperation among all community stakeholders.

“Because we wanted to create a culture that the campaign against illegal drugs is a shared responsibility and therefore everyone should do their part in achieving a drug-free community,” she told reporters yesterday.
