Mandaue steps up CICC purchase bid

April 27,2014 - 09:58 AM

The Mandaue City Council recently passed a resolution signifying the city government’s intention to purchase the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) from the province.

Councilor Diosdado Suico said the city’s purchase was made easier by the damage sustained by the CICC after the Oct. 15 earthquake and the Nov. 8 onslaught of Supertyphoon Yolanda last year.

He said the CICC hasn’t made  a profit for the province despite the billion  pesos spent for its construction.

Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III earlier said his administration is considering  selling  the CICC to the Mandaue City government.

The lot where the CICC stands belongs to Mandaue City.

Suico said the Local Finance Committee has yet to determine the amount the city will spend for the purchase.

He said Mandaue City which co-owns the CICC in a joint venture with the province, can still turn a profit with its acquisition and management of the CICC once it repairs the structure.

“The council will focus first on the acquisition. The repair and future use of the CICC complex will be planned next,” Suico said./Xavier University Intern Irish Maika R. Lam
