The University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department (USC-BED) Warriors is headed for another upset victory over the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters as they currently lead the secondary division standings of the 23rd Cebu City Olympics at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) and various venues around the city.
USC-BED, which ended UC’s streak in the Milo Little Olympics this year, is nearing another huge win as it gathered 228 points in the general championship rankings released by the organizers of the division meet yesterday. The defending champion is close at second with 203 points.
USC-BED’s elementary squad is also looking good in its bid to reclaim its elementary title as it piled up 226 points as of yesterday. The Warriors’ closest pursuer is South District 2 with 59.5 points. The squad is composed of the Pardo Elementary School, Quiot Elementary School and Bonbon Elementary School.
With just the basketball, football, lawn tennis, chess, dancesport and boxing left to be played today, it looks like USC-BED will escape with the win again.
USC-BED scored big in the volleyball competition worth 50 points after they defeated USJ-R and Saint Theresa’s College (STC) in the boys’ and girls’ division, respectively.
USC stunned USJ-R, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20 in the boys’ championship game and routed STC, 25-12, 25-23, 25-14, to bag the girls’ crown.
USC-BED also made a living from the pool as its swimmers topped the boys’ division worth 30 points. The girls’ side managed 20 points as UC topped this competition.
The Warriors also accumulated 30 points from gymnastics, which was dominated by UV. They also scored 20.5 points in table tennis after their boys’ team upset perennial powerhouse UC in the finals.
USC-BED added 40 points from athletics, which was as usual ruled by UC for 60 points.
The Webmasters finished strong in athletics by adding 10 more gold medals yesterday.
USC-BED’s elementary squad, meanwhile, scored big in athletics and swimming. It also won 30 points in gymnastics and got 15 points from its badminton girls’ squad.
But it wasn’t just a USC-BED and UC show yesterday. USJ-R’s word wizards emerged on top in the scrabble event and the Southwestern University’s (SWU) badminton team swept both the boys’ and girls’ division in the secondary division.
The competition continues today as Don Bosco faces Paref Springdale in football for the championship in the secondary division.
The Greywolves escaped University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F), 1-0, in extended regulation yesterday to make it to the finals.
Don Bosco’s elementary division booters also made it to the finals and will face Camp Lapu-Lapu Elementary School at the CCSC football pitch.
