CEBU CITY, Philippines — The police in Badian town in southwestern Cebu said the Kasawan Falls drowning victim is a tourist from South Korea.

Police Master Sergeant Melvin Collados, the desk officer on duty, identified the drowning victim as Jonas Hyale Lee, 35.

Callados earlier withheld the name and nationality of the fatality pending the completion of its initial investigation and the notification of his country’s embassy and his next of kin.

Lee, a tourist who is temporarily residing in Lapu-Lapu City on Mactan Island, was with a group of 18 Korean nationals swimming and frolicking at Kawasan Falls, one of Cebu’s prime tourist destinations,  when the incident happened past 2 p.m. today, according to Collados.

He said their initial investigation showed that Lee climbed on a ledge to take a dive but apparently took a wrong dive and fell badly into the water. The tourist still tried to swim but fell unconscious.

He was rushed to the Badian District Hospital in the town proper but was declared dead on arrival (DOA) by attending physicians, said Collados.

Kawasan Falls,  a series of three waterfalls located in Barangay Matutinao of Badian, 104 kilometers southwest of Cebu City, is one of the top tourist attractions in Cebu promoted both the Cebu provincial government and the Department of Tourism./elb
