Cebu City, Philippines — The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) 13 is looking to boost its tax collection in the region this year.
BIR 13, which covers Cebu and Bohol, said during an AGIO-PIA 7 Forum on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, that it looks to collect P34.7 billion tax revenue in the region in 2019.
In 2018, BIR-13 collected a total of P27.89 billion, which is higher from 2017’s P26.52 billion but still short of its target of P32.04 billion.
The missed target is attributed to the bigger take-home pay implemented under the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law.
To achieve this year’s target, the agency’s thurst is now on enforcement and monitoring though increased number of tax examiners and information drive on ways to file income tax returns.
Revenue officer Rainer Joseph Viacrusis said that taxpayers can now choose from the different “vehicles” to file and pay their returns.
Taxpayers may file online through the electronic filing payment system (eFPS) and the eBIR, which can be found in the agency’s website. Manual filing is still accepted.
Filers from eFPS can pay directly using the system while the payment for manual and eBIR forms filers is through authorized agent banks and to revenue collection agents stationed in each municipality.
Payment can also be done online through GCash for mobile.
The agency is also extending its working days to Saturday starting this week until the deadline of the filing, which is on April 15, 2019.
BIR-13 legal division head Atty. Jose Hector Baronda is also reminding taxpayers to pay their taxes and not just stop at filing.
“This is a criminal case, this is subject to a rate case (run after tax evaders) because this is willful failure to pay tax,” said Baronda.
Establishments found violating tax regulations and laws are subject to the agency’s Oplan Kandado, which closes erring businesses. /bmjo
