Governor’s Cup organizers vow to beef up security after rock-throwing incident in Tuburan

Cebu City, Philippines — The Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) headed by its executive director, Atty. Ramil Abing, announced it will beef up security for the players and officials in the wake of the stoning incident that occurred late Wednesday night, April 10, 2019,  after the games of the 2019 Governor’s Cup basketball tournament that were held in Tuburan.

Appraised of the incident on Thursday morning, Abing said he will have the incident investigated to ascertain whether it was related to the game or not.

“We will look into the throwing incident whether it’s game related or not. Matud pa, layo ra sa game venue ang hitabo,” said Abing  in a talk with Cebu Daily News.

Although nobody got injured, the driver-side window of the vehicle of Alegria got shattered after it got hit with a stone as it was making its way out of Tuburan. 

The vehicle carrying officials of the CPSC was also pelted with a rock.

“To ensure safety of players and coaching staff and to avoid similar incident that may cause serious damage, we will ask the police to at least escort the convoy when it leaves or at least patrol the vicinity where the games are held,” said Abing.

More importantly, Abing said he would coordinate and seek the assistance of the mayors of the participating municipalities and cities to ensure the safety of the visiting teams, its players and coaching staff, as well as officials of the CPSC. /bmjo
