Cebu City, Philippines—Tension gripped the conclusion of the staging of the quarterfinal round of the 2019 Governor’s Cup basketball tournament in Tuburan as the vehicles containing officials of the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) and players of the Municipality of Alegria were reportedly pelted with rocks on Wednesday night, April 10, 2019.

According to Alegria Councilor Arnold Cuevas, the driver’s side window of the vehicle they were riding in got smashed after it was hit by a rock while they were making their way home. He reported that although the driver got hit by the rock, he did not sustain any injuries.

Cuevas relayed to Cebu Daily News that the two vans of the CPSC were the first ones to get stoned. He learned about the incident after CPSC coach Van Halen Parmis gave him a call to warn him.

Cuevas immediately went to the Tuburan police station to file a blotter and ask for an escort to guide them out of town. A patrol car immediately responded but that did little to dissuade the perpetrators from attacking Alegria’s vehicle.

Cuevas said that there were no untoward incidents that occurred during the Wednesday night game, which saw Alegria get blown out by the home team Tuburan, 75-98.

CDN Digital tried to get the side of the organizers about the incident but calls were unanswered at press time. /bmjo
