Power up first week of May

THE Department of Energy (DOE) vows to fully restore power to Yolanda-affected areas in northern Cebu that have been without power by the first week of May.

DOE Regional Director Antonio Labios said power remains down in at least 15 barangays in the towns of Santa Fe and Bantayan which are serviced by Cebu Electric Cooperative (Cebeco) 2.

Labios said since December they have fully restored the power supply to Cebeco 1 and 3.

Out of 10 barangays in Santa Fe, only six had its power supply restored. While in Bantayan, five of 25 barangays still have no power supply.

The seven islets that are powered by solar power units are still without power as only 13 of the 480 units remain in good condition, the rest had been destroyed by typhoon Yolanda.

With the expected influx of tourists to northern Cebu this Holy Week, resorts may just have to rely on back-up power sources, Labios said.

The DOE announced that with Leyte power plants going back online, there will be ample power supply in the next months for the Visayas.

“We have an expected supply of 1,627 megawatts and the anticipated demand is only for 1,382,” he said.
