A 16-year old boy died after a motorcycle he rode on slammed onto a lamp post yesterday afternoon.

Though he was rushed immediately to the Badian District Hospital, Vengie Tomarong Libato died at 2:40 p.m. PO3 Nestor Tomilon said Libato was headed home to barangay Salagmaya in Alcantara town on board a “habal-habal” motorcycle driven by 56-year-old driver Bernard Basalo Diaz who tried to overtake another motorcycle. Libato and Diaz slammed onto a lamp post on a blind curve at barangay Candabong, still within Alcantara town.

Libato was severely injured while Diaz sustained minor injuries. Diaz faces charges filed against him by the victim’s family. In barangay Liong, Dumanjug town, an unidentified old woman died after being hit by a Ceres bus along the national highway. The Ceres bus bearing temporary plate number 071210 was driven by Casiano Mari Jr., a 40-year-old native of Compostela town, Cebu.

The woman was mentally ill. The police identified the victim as Dolores Banilad, a 62-year-old resident of barangay Bugay, Badian town in Cebu. PO1 Nestor Villanueva said the driver turned himself in at the Ronda municipal police precinct.

Villanueva said the Ceres Bus Corp. will give financial assistance to the victim’s family. Reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and traffic-related charges are expected to be filed against the drivers, police said. /with  Xavier University Intern Kent Ugalde
