LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines – The Lapu-Lapu City Government is planning to utilize public schools as isolation facilities for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive patients.

Dr. Agnes Realiza, head of the Lapu-Lapu City Health Department, said that this is due to the rise of COVID-19 cases in the city.

Earlier, Realiza said that they are preparing another building in the Lapu-Lapu City College to be converted into an isolation facility after its first building has already been filled with COVID-19 patients, while another building of the school has already been utilized.

“At the start of the COVID gyud, sauna naa gyud mi giatiman nga ubang eskwelahan nga among giapil. Pero gi-prioritize lang sa namo ang Lapu-Lapu City College. Pero when worse comes to worst, kung modaghan, mapugos gyud ta nga kadtong mga giplanohan natong eskwelahan maoy mahimo na sab nga isolation facility,” Realiza said.

Realiza, however, clarified that they would still need the approval of the Department of Education (DepEd) on this plan.

Meanwhile, Cindi Chan, chairperson of the City Tourism Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (TCHAC), said that the Department of Tourism (DOT) has already accredited six hotels in the city as isolation facilities.

These hotels will only cater to Returning Overseas Filipinos (ROFs), such as immigrants and Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), who will be arriving at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

Aside from the six, another two hotels are now processing their accreditation from the DOT to convert it into an isolation facility.

“Pero we really need baya 1,800 rooms at any given time kuno. 1,800 sa whole province ba kay the MCIA is limiting na the flights. Kay dili ta pataka’g dawat ug flights kay inig abot, asa man ibutang? So mao ni, we are imploring pa more small to medium establishments nga magpa-quarantine facility na,” Chan said.

Based on the monitoring of the Department of Health (DOH)-7, the city now has 309 active cases of COVID-19. /rcg
