Batang Gilas loses to Greece, now 0-2

The Philippine national youth team, known as the “Batang Gilas,” got routed by Greece, 65-85, for its second loss in the Fiba Under-17 World Championship last Saturday night at the Al-Ahli Gym in Dubai.

The Batang Gilas kept in step with Greece, the 14th-ranked team in the world, but slipped in the middle periods, where it got outscored, 9-21, 7-17, to trail by 30, 33-63, heading to the final frame.

The Batang Gilas was led by the 19 points of Jolo Mendoza while Matt Nieto had a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds.

The Philippines rounds out its preliminary round assignments with a match against the defending champions USA today at 10:45 p.m.
