Luck has sided with Cebu Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) President Engr. Gerry Maratas after he qualified for the Cepca 2014 Grand Tournament this December.
Despite finishing only in 4th place in last Sunday’s WNM Susan Itaas-Cepca Monthly Qualifying Tournament August Edition at the Handuraw Pizza-Gorordo, Maratas was able to grab a seat for the December finals as the top three finishers already qualified for the Battle of Champions.
National Master Arnold Cadiz emerged as the August edition winner as he topped the five-round Swiss System tournament with 4.5 points followed by Tony Cabibil and Peterson Sia at second and third with identical 4.0 points apiece.
Maratas finished the tournament with 3.5 points in a tie with Ben Dimaano, Rosendo Yamyamin, Harrison Chua, Jun Olis and Regelito Hortelano.
The top three finishers for the guests lady varsity players were Aireen Robillos of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) Jaguars, KC Morala of the University of San Carlos (USC) Lady Warriors and University of Cebu Lady Webmaster Laila Nadera.
