Cepca weekly chess: Rom, Flores score victories

CEBU CITY, Philippines—National Master (NM) Jasper Rom dominated the All-Cepcans category of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) weekly tournament last Sunday, October 17, 2021. 

The 49-year-old Rom, a member of the Philippine National Paralympic chess team, scored a total of 7.0 points in the nine-round Swiss system competition to rule the category. 

Many-time weekly champion Kristina Belano settled for second place with 6.5 points. 

Jasper Norman Montejo also scored 6.5 points but settled for third for accumulating lower tie-break points. 

Meanwhile, 63-year old and 2012 Cepca grand champion Reynaldo Flores ruled the Cepcans B category by scoring a total of 30 points. 

The category featured an arena-style blitz format. 

Claiming second place was Eladio Lim III, who scored 28 points, while Filemon Kapuno III settled for third also with 28. 

The tournament was sponsored by Cepca president Jerry Maratas, Richard Ouano and Manuel Abucay Jr.
