CEBU CITY, Philippines—The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Visayas Command will organize a charitable sports event dubbed “Heroes Adventure Challenge: Race to Rebuild Limasawa,” slated March 1, 2022.

Held in line with the celebration of AFP VisCom’s 34th anniversary on March 29, the race will be held in a virtual platform.

A press conference was held on Friday, February 25, to launch the virtual sports event at the De Goma Hall at the VisCom headquarters in Barangay Apas, here.

The launching was attended by AFP VisCom Commander Major General Robert Dauz together with race organizer Theresa Mae Conson, and one of its ambassadors, Olympian Mary Joy Tabal.

The beneficiary of this race is the Island of Limasawa in Southern Leyte, which was one of the heavily devastated areas in the Visayas after Typhoon Odette.

“We have chosen Limasawa Island because 90 percent of the structures there were totally damaged while the remaining 10 percent was severely damaged. So they really need help there,” said Dauz during the launching.

The proceeds will be utilized to procure construction materials that will be handed over to the LGU of Limasawa on the last day of the event on March 31.

The turnover coincides with the 501st Anniversary of the first Holy Mass in the Philippines that was held in Magallanes, Limasawa on March 31, 1521 from Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition.

The virtual sports event will have three separate disciplines; running, biking, and motorcycle ride.

The run distance will be 5 kilometers  and  21 kms (half marathon).

The bike category has 20 km (starter) and the 50 km (intermediate).

The motorcycle ride category features a grueling 600-km distance.

All participants are supposed to finish their chosen distances within a month starting March 1.

According to Dauz, the AFP VisCom estimates that there will bw more than a thousand personnel who will join the event.

“We are expecting to have more than a thousand participants from our ranks, including the 8th Infantry Division. We are also expecting more from the AFP, Philippine Navy, Philippine Air Force, and the Philippine Military Academy,” Dauz said.

For her side, Conson also expects around a thousand participants aside from VisCom’s estimated number.

To register, one can visit the Heroes Adventure Challenge Facebook page.

The registration fee is pegged at P650 for the run and bike categories and P1,200 for the motorcycle ride. These are inclusive of the freebies and accessories from the organizers.
