Two men were killed instantly while another is in critical condition after a motorcycle they were riding collided with a Hyundai Starex van driven by a Korean businessman at sitio Looc, barangay Poblacion, Liloan town in Cebu at dawn yesterday.

Wilson Deiparine and a 25-year-old backrider identified as Jomar Sugarol died on the spot while another backrider, 28-year-old Randy Manzano, was in critical condition at the Danao City Hospital.

The three were headed home to sitio Angelico, barangay Poblacion, Liloan town, Cebu after they attended a fiesta celebration at sitio Sambag, barangay Cotcot, also in Liloan when the accident occurred.

P02 Rutchel Jugalbot, traffic investigator of the Liloan Municipal Police Office said the Korean businessman Lim Taejin was headed home for barangay Maslog, Danao City when he decided to overtake a slow-moving vehicle that stopped in the middle of the road.

Jugalbot said Lim, who allegedly reeked alcohol, was unaware that the three were headed towards his direction from the opposite lane.

Smelled of liquor

Jugalbot said Lim told him that the speeding motorcycle driven by Deiparine had no headlights on.
Lim said he tried to avoid the vehicle.

The force of the collision knocked off both Deiparine and Sugarol nearly 10 feet away from the motorcycle while Manzano was thrown 20 feet away to the opposite lane, Jugalbot said.

“Dili man siya (Lim) hubog, tarong man siya istoryahon pero nanimaho lang siya og gamay, klaro gyod nga nakainom to siya (He wasn’t drunk, he can talk straight but he smelled of liquor it was clear that he drank),” Jugalbot said.

The motorcycle driven by Deiparine was destroyed while the van sustained damage on the right portion of the windshield and the hood.

Afraid

Lim only sustained scratches on his left arm caused by the glass from the damaged windshield.

“Pag-abot namo didto mam, tua ra jod siya sulod sa iyang sakyanan. Iya rang giablihan gamay aron makasulod ang hangin. Wala ra siya migawas kay mahadlok siya kulatahon sa mga tawo didto (When we reached the area, Lim was inside the vehicle and opened it slightly so the air could get in. He was afraid that he may get beaten up by the people there), “ Jugalbot said.

The police arrested Lim while Manzano was rushed to the Danao City Hospital. Deiparine and Sugarol were brought to the funeral parlors by their families.

Lim was brought to Mactan Doctor’s Hospital after he complained of stomach pain. Jugalbot said the police are still waiting on the families of the victims to decide on filing charges against Lim.
