CEBU CITY, Philippines — On their first day in public office after the May 9 elections, members of Cebu province’s 16th Sangguniang Panlalawigan, or Provincial Board, convened on Monday, July 4.

As they are set to create laws and resolutions in the coming weeks, reelected Cebu Vice Gov. Hilario Davide III urged the Provincial Board to help the public cope with inflation, particularly the rising costs of fuel.

Davide, in his message during Monday’s Inaugural Session, urged all 17 members of the Provincial Board to enact measures that could cushion the impact of increased prices in basic commodities, including petroleum products.

These included, but not limited to, measures to prevent opportunistic individuals from taking advantage of the current situation.

“More challenges are moving in the horizon. The rising costs of fuel that have pushed the prices of essential goods through the roofs, are burdening the Cebuanos,” Davide said.

“Legislative measures that will help open more opportunities to hamper the high cost of living, and protect the poor from opportunists and the sustained gains of the programs of the Capitol will be the new challenge of this August chamber,” he said.

As the vice governor, Davide sits as the chairperson of the Provincial Board, the Capitol’s legislative body.

During Monday’s Inaugural Session at the Social Hall of the Legislative Building, the new members of the Provincial Board were officially welcomed.

They are Board Members Raymund Calderon and Dr. Stanley Caminero (2nd District), Cesar Baricuatro (7th District), and Mike Villamor (5th District).
