Arellano tops July 3 Cepca online chess tournament

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Bryle Arellano and Leo Lofranco ruled the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) weekly online chess tournament on Sunday, July 3, 2022.

Arellano topped the All-Cepcans category while Lofranco ruled the Prexy Jerry Blitz Arena category.

The 33-year-old Arellano of Bago City finished the nine-round Swiss system comnpetition in the All-Cepcans category with 8.0 points.

He defeated Adore Kidd Salazar, Lofranco, Edwin Cablao, Nicanor Cuizon, National Master (NM) Rogelio Enriquez Jr., Peterson Sia, Michael Tinga, and Manuel Abucay in his campaign.

However, eventual fourth placer, Antonio Cabibil prevented Arellano from winning all his matches by defeating the latter in the eighth round.

Nonetheless, Arellano also played in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) had enough wins to tow him into the top of the final rankings.

NM Enriquez Jr. finished second followed by Jimmy Ty Jr., Sia, and Cabibil in the All-Cepcans category.

Meanwhile, the 65-year-old Lofranco who is also a physician and a persistent sponsor of Cepca’s tournaments emerged champion in the Prexy Jerry Blitz Arena category.

Lofranco and eventual second placer Jonard Labadan both scored 36 points, but the former had a better performance rating to emerge as the champion.

Rounding off the top three were Salazar, who scored 20 points, followed by Richard Ouano with 17 points, and Cuizon at fifth place with 13 points.
