Rama hits DPWH for closing roads

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama wants the regional office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-7) to stop using the city’s roads in  assembling culverts for its infrastructure projects.

He cited as examples the situation along Veteran’s Drive in barangay Lahug near JY Square Mall and along Gen. Maxilom Ext. near the old White Gold House where portions of the roads were closed to give way for prefabricating culverts to be used for a drainage improvement project in the area.

“I strongly present my utmost disgust on how infrastructure by DPWH are being done on the roads. That should be stopped. If you want to do something, don’t make the road as a place where you would like to create the prefabricated canal. You can have that done somewhere, rent a place and use heavy equipment to bring it,” Rama told reporters yesterday.

Rama said he will set a meeting with DPWH-7 officials to discuss the matter. He will also discuss an incident during the All Souls’ Day celebration wherein he blew his top because a DPWH contractor left their heavy equipment along V. Rama Ave. obstructing pedestrians trooping to the Calamba Cemetery.

In Mandaue City, local officials are also facing problems of road accidents and traffic congestion along A.S. Fortuna St. where the DPWH is also installing box culverts to improve the drainage system.

In the case of  Lahug, half of the road has been closed to give way for the DPWH to assemble the culverts to be used to improve the drainage system in the area.

During rains, heavy flooding occurs in the area as water from the higher areas of Busay flows down.
