IF THERE ever was any singular lesson that Junthy Valenzuela learned from his brief but fruitful stint as head coach of the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, it would be this: it’s not easy being a coach.
This was what the former PBA wingman reiterated in an exclusive interview with Cebu Daily News last Thursday evening, shortly after news of his resignation from the position broke out.
“Katong player pa ko, practice ug duwa ra man akong huna-hunaon. Pero pag coach, daghan kaayo ka dalhon na trabaho sa balay. Tapos magtudlo pa ka sa mga bata,” said Valenzuela, who stepped down from his position as head coach after leading the Warriors back to the Cesafi finals for the first time since 2007.
The 6-foot-1 two-guard who made a name for himself as a rugged and tough player during his prolific career in the pros, went as far as second-guessing himself and his abilities as head coach, especially after the Warriors lost to the
Southwestern University Cobras in the finals.
“Basin dili jud diay ko coach. Daghan pa ko angay makat-unan,” admitted Valenzuela while adding that the finals loss wore heavily on him.
The former Salazar Institute of Technology standout said that there were a lot of factors that played into his decision to step away from the position, but none bigger than the business that he has to manage in the municipality of Asturias.
