LPA to bring rains; Colder days ahead

February 03,2015 - 08:15 AM

The weather bureau warned residents in parts of the Visayas and Mindanao of moderate to heavy rain because of the  trough  of a low pressure area (LPA) affecting Eastern Visayas and Caraga.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) alerted people in Leyte, Bohol, and the regions of Caraga and Northern Mindanao.
The northeast monsoon or Amihan continues to affect Luzon.

The rest of Visayas will be cloudy with light to moderate rain.

Colder days
In Cebu, the lowest temperature was recorded at 20 degrees Celsius around 2 a.m. yesterday.

As the northeast monsoon intensifies, temperature has gone down.

Baguio City residents and visitors shivered as the city posted its lowest temperature yet last Monday, since the onset of the northeast monsoon.

Panahon TV said temperature dropped to 9.8 degrees Celsius at 6 a.m., beating the previous record of 10.4 degrees Celsius last January 24.

The northeast monsoon, responsible for the cold weather, started in October and will prevail until March.

The lowest temperature in Baguio City was recorded on Jan. 18, 1961 at 6.3 degrees Celsius.

Warmest year
Meanwhile, the UN weather agency said  2014 was the warmest year on record, though the temperature difference with 2010 and 2005 is so small that it’s impossible to say for sure which of the three years was the hottest.

The World Meteorological Organization’s analysis Monday mirrored findings two weeks ago by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and also included data from the Met Office in Britain.

The Geneva-based WMO said surface temperatures were 0.57 C (1.03 F) above average last year. That’s slightly warmer than 2010 and 2005, but the difference was within the uncertainty margin of 0.10 C (0.18 F).

With 14 of the 15 hottest years recorded this century, WMO chief Michel Jarraud said warming is expected to continue as atmospheric levels of heat-trapping CO2 rise./Inquirer and AP
