Balamban—The athletes of Mandaue City made a strong push yesterday but the defending champions Cebu City Niños did just enough to keep the lead after four days of action in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) meet held in different venues here.

With the results in swimming already accounted for, the Niños upped their gold-silver-bronze medal count to 40-43-31 to continue their hold on the leadership.

Mandaue City, however, threatened to close in as it trails Cebu City by just five golds, climbing two notches higher to move up to second place with a 35-10-12 medal haul.

Mandaue City’s surge was led by by its arnis team, which grabbed 20 gold medals in the elementary and secondary divisions, leaving the other teams to squabble over the leftovers.

The Niños, for their part, relied mostly on their athletics teams in both secondary and elementary divisions for their gold medal harvest.

Paul Ian Gregorio led the Niños’ onslaught at the track and field of the Exasperanza S. Binghay Memorial Sports Oval as he captured three god medals in the secondary boys’ division by ruling the 110-meter hurdles in 15.59 seconds, the 100m dash in 11.28 seconds and the 200m dash in 23.59 seconds.

Also winning multiple gilts for Cebu City was Kyle Kenjie Dahili, who dominated the elementary boys’ 400m dash (1:02.96 minutes) and the 200m dash (26.68 seconds).

Karl Jie Emnace, for his part, also doled out a couple of gilts for the Niños as he won the secondary boys’ 400m dash (53.53 seconds) and the 800m run (2:07.38 minutes).

The other track and field bets for the Niños who finished atop their events are Ivan Miguel Santos in secondary boys’ 3,000-meter steeple chase, Elyzza Mae Salinas in secondary girls’ 110m hurdles (16.68 seconds), John Martin Rafols in secondary boys’ triple jump (13.41 meters), Jhuvan Jehn Baculot in secondary girls’ triple jump (10.22 meters) and Mart Chan Torregosa in elementary boys’ 400m hurdles (1:08.69).

Samantha Gem Limos increased her gold medal haul after she topped the elementary girls’ 100m hurdles in 13.94 seconds.

In taekwondo, which was held at the Pondol Covered Court in Brgy. Pondol, doling out gold medals for Cebu City were Charles Lawrence Labiste in the elementary boys’ division, Althea Rosel, Mary Jocelyn Syllanto and Anne Sharmaine

Albarracin in elementary girls and the troika of Zozen Prajes, Micah Marie Mission and Loralee Natividad, who each pocketed a gold in the secondary girls’ division.

On the other hand, powering the Mandaue City arnis team at the University of San Jose Recoletos-Balamban Campus in barangay Arpili were Roel John Segurra, who snared three gilts in just one day after topping the secondary boys’ Anyo

Form’s single weapon, double weapon and team performance competitions.

Joining Segurra in Mandaue’s multiple gold medal winners list was Krezel Angana, who dominated the secondary girls’ single weapon category and led the squad to a gold medal finish in the team performance of the Anyo or Kata competitions.

The other gold medal winners of Mandaue in arnis were Alion Lindayao, who ruled the secondary boys’ double weapon category, Jenely Espiritu, who topped the secondary girls’ double weapon category, and Michelle Tumawak, who duplicated Espiritu’s feat in the elementary girls’ division.

Mandaue also got several gilts at the track courtesy of Carmela Therese Dublin, who dominated the secondary girls’ 100m dash in 12.94 seconds and the 200m dash in 27.32 seconds, Rogelio Miguel Tremedal won his second gold in archery after he topped the secondary boys’ 40-meter competition.
