A Grade 5 student in Antipolo City died on Monday, October 2, 2023, 11 days after his teacher allegedly pulled his hair and slapped him in school.

Elena Minggoy said her 14-year-old son Francis Jay Gumikib was hurt by his teacher on September 20 after he reported about his noisy classmates.

According to the student’s mother, her son complained of pain in the ear and dizziness after being hit by the teacher. Her son still managed to attend school in the three days that followed. But on September 26, the Grade 5 student experienced dizziness, headache, and vomiting, which prompted them to rush him to the hospital.

The student fell into a coma and eventually died on October 2, Minggoy said, adding that the doctor found bleeding in her son’s brain.

The Land Transportation Office in Central Visayas said it apprehended 13 ‘colorum’ vehicles within three days in September 2023.

According to the press statement, the anti-colorum operations took place on September 19 to 21, during the LTO-7’s random roadside inspection in Cebu City, Talisay City, and Minglanilla town.

‘Colorum’ vehicles are public utility vehicles that run without a franchise from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.

Gilas outlasts Iran, 84-83, to reach Asian Games semis

Gilas Pilipinas nipped Iran, 84-83 on Tuesday to reach the semifinal round of the 19th Asian Games men’s basketball in Hangzhou, China.

Justin Brownlee led Gilas with 36 points while Cebuano June Mar Fajardo added 18, as the Filipinos made their first semifinal appearance in the quadrennial meet for the first time since 2002.

Gilas led by as many as 21 points but squandered that lead in the final frame, where the Iranians even managed to wrest control of the game heading into the final minute of the contest at Zhejiang University Gymnasium.

Matin Aghajanpour and Mohammad Vahedi joined hands in a last-ditch effort in the final frame that helped Iran wrest control, 81-80, with 1:33 remaining.

Brownlee then hit a tough floater to give Gilas a slim edge, which the nationals clung to until the final buzzer. The Philippines will take on China next.

Chicago woman, 104 years old, eyes world’s oldest skydiver record

A 104-year-old Chicago woman is hoping to be certified as the oldest person to ever skydive after leaving her walker on the ground and making a tandem jump in northern Illinois.

“Age is just a number,” Dorothy Hoffner told a cheering crowd moments after touching the ground Sunday at Skydive Chicago in Ottawa, about 85 miles southwest of Chicago, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The Guinness World Record for the oldest skydiver was set in May 2022 by 103-year-old Linnéa Ingegärd Larsson from Sweden. But Skydive Chicago is working to have Guinness World Records certify Hoffner’s jump as a record, WLS-TV reported.

Hoffner first skydived when she was 100. On Sunday, she left her walker behind just short of the plane — a Skyvan — and was helped up the steps to join the others waiting inside to skydive.
