Carnapping: Man on probation nabbed for stealing neighbor’s motorcycle in Cebu City

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Carnapping charges will be filed against a 26-year-old man accused of stealing a neighbor’s motorcycle worth P135,000 while it was parked at the Alumnos Gym in Barangay Basak-San Nicolas, Cebu City on Friday afternoon, October 20, 2023.

The alleged suspect was identified as Kyle Samonte, 26, and a resident of the barangay.

Samonte was arrested on the same day he reportedly stole the motorcycle during a follow-up operation by personnel of the Mambaling Police Station.

The carnapping victim and owner of the motorcycle was identified as 20-year-old Rheynon Joshua Villahermosa, who works as a waiter.

The police report revealed that at around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Villahermosa came to the station to report an alleged carnapping.

The victim told police that his motorcycle, worth P135,000, was stolen at the gym where he parked it near his residence.

Upon investigation, closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed the suspect stealing the motorcycle owned by Villahermosa.

Police then conducted a follow-up operation at around 7:50 p.m. on the same day and arrested the carnapping suspect.

Suspect has stolen another motorcycle on Monday 

According to the report, authorities recovered from Samonte’s possession the stolen motorcycle and another motorcycle worth P60,000 that was reported missing on Monday, October 16.

The second motorcycle was from Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City. The owner of the second motorcycle also positively identified the stolen vehicle as well as the alleged carnapping suspect, Samonte.

Samonte has been arrested in 2019 for theft and is currently under probation, according to the report.

The alleged suspect is now detained at the Mambaling Police Station pending the filing of appropriate charges against him.

The police report shows that he will be facing charges of carnapping.    /rcg
