Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma yesterday called on the country’s new lawyers to uphold truth and justice as they practice their profession.
“We always say that it is a blessing from the Lord. Every good gift is an opportunity to serve the community and to glorify God. In this context, may they use this to make this world a better place to live in,” Palma told reporters at the Archbishop’s Residence yesterday.
A total of 1,126 or equivalent to 18.82 % of the 6,344 examinees passed the 2014 bar exams.
One of those who made it was Fr. Dan Domingo Delos Angeles, a priest of the Archdiocese of Cebu.
Archbishop Palma said he was elated when he heard the news last Thursday.
“Praise and thank God that He gifted him (Delos Angeles) with this blessing. Passing the bar exams is not easy. In fact, the passing rate in last year’s exams was just 18 percent,” he said.
Palma said the Catholic Church usually discourages priests from becoming lawyers.
But he said Delos Angeles could always use his gifts and talents for the good of the Church.
“I think he (Delos Angeles) is more of solutions than problems. There are ways to make optimum use of his gift for the good of the Church,” Palma said.
The archbishop said he earlier encouraged another priest in Samar to take the bar examinations. Unfortunately, he did not make it.
“We are very happy for Fr. Dan… At the moment, he deserves to celebrate first rather than thinking of the work that awaits him,” Palma said.
In an interview last Thursday, Delos Angeles said he will remain a priest even though he is now lawyer and use every achievement for the glory of God and the Church.
Archbishop Emeritus of Cebu Ricardo Cardinal Vidal earlier gave Delos Angeles his blessing to study law after the priest got a scholarship for having received the top honors in his doctorate classes at the University of San Jose-Recoletos.
When he finished his law studies, Palma urged him to take the bar exams.
Delos Angeles took the bar exams for the first time in October 2014.
He credited his success to God and the saints whom he requested to assist him before and during the bar exams which was considered as one of the toughest licensure tests in the country.
