Carolinian gets Cabahug award
An Accountancy graduate from the University of San Carlos is this year’s awardee for Justice Sotero B. Cabahug Medal for Academic Excellence.
Rieland Cuevas, 22, of barangay Maguikay, Mandaue City is the only summa cum laude among the contenders for the Sotero B. Cabahug Excellence Awards this year.
The award was first given in 1923.
Since then there have been 72 gold medalists,said Dr. Susana B. Cabahug, awards committee chairperson.
(The award was suspended during the administration of the late mayor Alfredo Ouano.)
The awarding was one of the highlights of yesterday’s celebration of Justice Sotero B. Cabahug Day.
It started with a Mass at the St. Joseph Shrine, followed by a floral offering and a short program beside the Mandaue City Hall where the statue of Cabahug stands.
The award rites and testimonial dinner were held in the evening at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.
Guadalupe “Luping” Latonio, granddaughter of Justice Cabahug, presented the awards on behalf of the clan.
Cuevas was awarded the 18 karat gold medal donated by the heirs of Justice Cabahug.
Nine students from Mandaue city who graduated with magna cum laude honors from the University of San Carlos, University of San Jose-Recoletos and University of Cebu also received Honorable Mayor Jonas C. Cortes medals. Sixteen high school students from different schools in Mandaue got the Honorable Vice Mayor Glenn O. Bercede medals; and 26 college graduates with cum laude honors were given Sangguniang Panlungsod medals.
The Justice Sotero B. Cabahug Medal for Academic Excellence aims to encourage all Mandauehanons to take their studies seriously, to attain excellence as well as prominence to contribute to the honor of the city of Mandaue as well as the Province of Cebu and the Republic of the Philippines.
