Escapee recaptured after 19-hour hunt

By: Norman V. Mendoza May 09,2015 - 12:33 AM

An inmate of the Lapu-Lapu City Jail who escaped Thursday afternoon was recaptured by his jailers at JY Square in Cebu city yesterday.

Saveniano Dayondon, 34, said he bolted the jail because  he badly missed his children  and wanted to be with his live-in partner who is giving birth soon.

Dayondon, a native of Pagadian City, used to reside in  barangay Agus, Lapu-Lapu City.

He   was  jailed last March on  charges of  possession of illegal substances and  illegal possession of firearms.

Dayondon escaped by removing the GI roofing  sheets of the  jail’s comfort room and climbing out.

He then climbed over  the jail’s fence.

Dayondon was supposed to be  in the jail’s workshop as part of its livelihood program. At about  3 p.m., the jail guard on duty noticed that Dayondon was no longer there.

A team  led by Jail Warden Reynante Rubio immediately coordinated with the City Intelligence Branch of the Lapu-Lapu city to  launch a manhunt.

They used an inmate    who, jail authorities discovered,  had planned to escape with Dayondon, to lure  the escapee into  meeting up with him.

Dayondon went to JY Square to see his fellow inmate, whom he thought had also managed to escaped.

The warden said  Dayondon and the other inmate had planned to lie low in barangay Mabolo and escape detection of the  authorities.

The search for the escapee took 19 hours.

An investigation will be conducted  to determine  if there were security lapses that should be corrected in relation to Dayondon’s escape.
