THE regional Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is open to a proposal by Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama to remove the center island along Pope John Paul II Avenue to decongest traffic in the city.
BACKSTORY: SAVE TREES OR EASE TRAFFIC?
“We welcome any initiative to further improve our roads,” DPWH regional director Ador Canlas said.
Rama is pushing for the removal of the center island in front of the San Carlos Seminary Complex to decongest traffic in the area ahead of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings next month and the International Eucharistic Congress in January.
Canlas said he will wait for design proposals from the city government.
“I cannot comment further since I haven’t seen any designs yet,” Canlas said.
He earlier ordered all telecommunication and utility companies to stop their excavation projects along the APEC route.
Based on Rama’s proposal, only the center island from Archbishop Reyes Ave. to the corner of Cardinal Rosales Ave. and F. Cabahug St. will be affected.
