Mandaue to start traffic experiment this August
Mandaue City will start its 60-day dry run of the experimental one-way traffic scheme in the first week of August.
The Mandaue City Council approved the scheme yesterday.
The council authorized TEAM (Traffic Enforcement and Management) to conduct a study and implement the needed rerouting for all motor vehicles to reduce the heavy volume of traffic in the city’s streets as well as on the national roads within the territorial jurisdiction of the city for the duration of the trial period.
Councilor Elstone Dabon, chairman of the committee on transportation, yesterday said the city is doing its best to manage the traffic and mitigate the impact of the projects being undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The new scheme will involve two roads at the center of the city being made into one-way streets. There will also be some changes in the flow of traffic in other roads to manage bottlenecks in those areas.
S.B. Cabahug St. starting at corner A. Del Rosario at Centro, Mandaue will be made one-way for vehicles toward corner UN Avenue at Pacific Mall.
P. Burgos St. starting at corner UN Avenue will also be made one-way for all vehicles toward A. Soriano St. at the reclamation area.
Meanwhile, the hosting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings will cause work slippage in some of the DPWH projects, especially in the Mandaue City area.
Engineer Ador Canlas, DPWH regional director, said they are taking measures to lessen the impact.
These include asking contractors to extend the work hours to three shifts.
According to the DPWH, there are three projects implemented along the APEC route, namely, the road repairs along Plaridel St. in Mandaue City, the retrofitting of permanent bridges along Subangdaku flyover and the rubber expansion joint replacement work at the Marcelo Fernan Bridge.
