THE elementary athletes of the University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department (USC-BED) and University of Cebu (UC) figured in a tight race at the start of the athletics competition of the Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.
USC-BED took the early lead after raking in six golds, seven silvers and five bronzes.
Mary Joy Loberanis and Francis John Arnibal led USC-BED’s medal haul after they won gold in the 1,500-meter run in the girls and boys competitions, respectively. Loberanis also pocketed a gold medal in 3,000m run.
Kier Ivan Apostol also got gold for USC-BED the boys 110m hurdles while adding bronze finish in the 400m hurdles.
John Dean Durano and Stephen Pekitpekit accounted for USC-BED’s two other golds.
UC, the defending champion, came in at close second with also six golds, five silvers and eight bronzes.
Winning golds for UC in hurdles were Samantha Limas (400m), Elyzza Mae Salinas (100m and 400m), and Jhuvan Jhen Baculot (high jump).
In the boys division, UC got golds from Remark Buenavista (3000m steeple chase) and Carl Babao (discus throw).
SHS-ADC wound up third with four golds, four silvers and three bronzes.
In the collegiate competition, defending championUniversity of Cebu are off to a solid start, grabbing the early lead by amassing six golds, three silvers and four bronzes.
USC and University of Southern Philippines-Foundation each had one gold.
USC showed why it is the reigning champion in the women’s division after starting the tournament with five golds, five silvers and two bronzes.
Threatening USC is UC, which took the second place with five golds, two silvers and three bronzes.
Other events will be played today at the same venue.
