The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors brightened their chances of making it to the championship round after they nipped the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 30-28, 25-22, 25-20 in the semifinal round of the Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc.(Cesafi) men’s volleyball tournament yesterday at USC Main Gym.

The Warriors will have little time to rest as they will play the defending champions Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras today.

“Hopefully makadaog mi versus SWU para assured na kami sa Finals” said USC assistant coach Jessie Yungco.

Yungco said the Warriors came into the match mentally prepared and did well in the defensive end.

“I think ang ilang mental preparation, focus sila sa depensa, sa blocking. Ang blocking gyud ang factor,” said Yungco.

Also in the men’s action, the defending champions Cobras (1-0) survived an endgame scare from the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (0-1) to complete a five-set thriller 23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 15-10.

In the girls division, SWU (1-0) overwhelmed the defending champions Warriors (0-1), 25-19, 25-19.

It was the second straight win by the Cobras over the Warriors this season.

SWU defeated the same USC squad in their initial encounter, 25-18, 22-25, 25-13.

Also in girls action, USJ-R (1-0) tripped the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo Magis Eagles, (0-1) 25-22, 27-25.

In the women’s division, SWU (5-0) ended the elimination round unbeaten after it annihilated University of Cebu Webmasters (0-5) 25-12, 25-21, 25-15.
