Money is no problem when creating unique Christmas decorations by sales clerk Shelany Pafibe of Talisay City and a group of language teachers in Cebu City.

Pafibe, a sales clerk of the Ink Pro shop in barangay Tabunok, Talisay City, made small snowmen out of 18 soft drink bottle crowns, nail polish, used buttons, old strings and several plastic bottles.

Pafibe also collected wine bottles from her neighbors and come up with a winter-themed vases.

“I just asked the shop’s neighbors to give their bottles to me, then I used styrofoam to make the snow,” she said. Her Christmas tree is made of 96 plastic forks which Pafibe collected from her friend.

The snowmen and the Christmas tree draw the attention of customers and passersby.

“Most of our customers would take a picture of our Christmas decorations. One teacher came here several times just to look at the decor and ask me how I made it,” Pafibe said.

There’s a lantern made of old compact discs (CDs).

“I have a friend who sells CDs, so instead of throwing it away, I went to his shop and asked for them,” she said.

Pafibe said it was fulfilling to see customers appreciate her decorations.

“I want to show people that it is okay not to spend too much for Christmas decorations. Instead, we can maximize our creativity and recycle materials,” Pafibe said.

Pafibe and her workmates started working on the decorations in early November.

It took them two weeks to complete everything.

“Right now, I’m planning to make recycled decorations for Valentine’s Day and other occasions. I am really starting to like what I am doing,” she said.

At the Keppel Building in the Cebu Business Park, a group of teachers of Langrich-on Language Proficiency Inc. used pages of old magazines to make a Christmas wreath in their office.

Their Christmas tree had folded paper designs of hanging rice (“puso) as ornaments using origami techniques.

They also designed a miniature Church out of cartolina for their “Pasko sa Sugbo (Christmas in Cebu)” theme.

“We did not spend a lot for decor. For only P500, we decorated our office. And this way we are also helping protect the environment,” English teacher Gretchen Arcipe said.
