Seven Cebu universities have been declared as Centers of Excellence (COEs) and Centers of Development (CODs) in various disciplines for the years 2016 to 2018.

The University of San Carlos (USC), Cebu Normal University (CNU), Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) and University of the Philippines-Cebu (UP Cebu) were declared by the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) as Centers of Excellence in 10 different fields.

The University of the Visayas (UV), University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), University of Cebu (UC) and USC were declared as Centers of Development for 11 different fields.

“Universities in Cebu have grown exponentially in the past years, and are expected to grow more. Cebuanos will now have more opportunities to be educated in the best way possible,” said Freddie Bernal, director of CHED VII.

Being proclaimed a Center of Excellence means that the university “has demonstrated excellent performance in a respective field in the areas of teaching instruction, research and publication, extension and linkages, and has reached institutional qualifications.

Bernal said this allows the university to be identified as a world-class educational center, and can be advertised by the government to international institutions for student exchanges and international lectures, among others.

USC, as the biggest university in Cebu City, was declared as COE for Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Office Administration, Chemical Engineering, Physics and Anthropology.

CNU is the sole COE in Central Visayas for Nursing while UP Cebu was declared as COE for Information Technology and Environmental Sciences. CIT-U was also declared COE for Information Technology.

Centers of Development or CODs, on the other hand, are identified as potential centers of excellence.

Bernal said CODs are identified so that CHED can help them improve their status and sustain it for the coming years.
USC was declared as COD for Hotel and Restaurant Management, Tourism, Computer Engineering, Philosophy, Information Technology, Biology, Chemistry and Marine Science.

USJ-R is the only COD for Accountancy in Central Visayas, and is a COD for Business Administration. UC is a COD for Criminology, while UV is a COD for Business Administration.

The Centers of Excellence and Development program is mandated under Section 8 of RA 7722, also known as the Higher Education Act of 1994.

Being a COE or COD makes the university qualified to apply for financial assistance from CHED through project-based proposals geared towards the development of the university in their respective fields.
