Cebu: much more than the city

CEBU  is a popular destination for those looking for a city break with a gateway into the countryside. While the city itself is one of the busiest in the country, the island is also blessed with nature reserves, seaside getaways and animal sanctuaries.

Of course, heritage sights are a must-see when visiting Cebu for the first time—the Santo Niño at the Basilica del Santo Niño; Pari-an’s age-old houses and churches; the Lapu-Lapu Shrine in Punta Engaño, and more.

But (hello, Sinulog revelers!) if you have “extra” days in Cebu, here are some quick trips to take from the city:

Highland adventures

Just an hour away from the heart of the city, enjoy fresh breeze and cooler temperature away from the bustle of urban life. Start your day trip watching a dramatic sunrise at Betty’s Botanical Garden in Cantipla. Interestingly, the garden is home to a collection of beautiful  floral plants, including rare as well as endemic species.

Then along Pung-ol Transcentral Highway are produce stalls where you can snack on  fresh coconut and sweet corn.  Some  establishments in Busay also offer zipline rides, like the Cebu Zipline and Adventure Café.

Finally, wrap up the day watching the sunset at the Temple of Leah. You may also want to do  a quick climb (about half an hour ascent for seasoned trekkers) to  Sirao Peak. Contact the office of Cebu City Highland’s Deputy Mayor Jong Alcover at 0917-7132919 for assistance and inquiries.

Natural charm

Also an hour away from Cebu City is The Historic Resort City of Lapu-Lapu. Here, you can treat yourself to a nice relaxing day at the beach, with the sand between your toes amidst the sound of crashing waves and bathe in the sun. You can even swim with the fishes if you like.

Lapu-Lapu is home  not only to posh resorts but also to nature sanctuaries in surrounding islands. Which is why island hopping is one of its attractions. You can explore Olanggo and Caohagan islands. One of the most beautiful islands in Mactan, Caohagan is blessed with a long moon-shaped sandbar. Meanwhile, Olango is home to a bird and marine sanctuaries.

Chasing  waterfalls

Cebu has over 100 waterfalls and this quaint town 93 miles south of Cebu City is where you find six of them. Aguinid, Dao, and Binalayan Hidden Falls are among the magnificent natural attractions in Samboan.

Canyoneering, rock climbing

Canyoneering in Alegria

Canyoneering in Alegria

This one’s highly recommended for thrill-seekers visiting Cebu.  Downstream Canyoneering from Kanlaob Alegria to the majestic Kawasan Falls in Badian is the most popular canyoning route. The activity will require you to walk through nature trails, jump waterfalls, swim and climb boulders.

Samboan Waterfall + Canyoneering

Adventure is ideally an overnight trip. Travel time from Cebu City to Samboan takes about five hours by bus. Visit Samboan on the first day, stay for a night at Alegria or Matutinao, and go canyoneering in the morning before heading back to the city late in the afternoon.

Beaches of North

Bantayan and Malapascua are favorite destinations in the northern part of Cebu. Both boast of a beautiful stretch of white sand beaches with turquoise clear waters.

BIG - Caohagan Island 1

Moreover, diving in Malapascua Island is famous worldwide for being the only place in the world where you can observe the very elusive thresher sharks. It is advisable to at least stay overnight at either destination since traveling time takes about five hours, one way.

A river cruise

The Bojo River Nature Reserve in Aloguinsan includes a 1.4 km-long river and its riparian zone, and it’s home to some 61 bird species and remarkable flora. Hop on the traditional baroto with a local guide interpreting the river’s natural and cultural heritage.

You can also take the 400-meter trek along the boardwalk cutting across a mangrove forest and a 150-step natural trail carved along a hillside which will bring you  to a gazebo overlooking the river.
