A call for unity and focus on marginalized women was the impassioned plea of government officials and leaders of the One Billion Rising Revolution 2016 held yesterday at the Capitol grounds.

Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III encouraged the participants to continue the fight against abuse of women and girls.

“We still have a long way to go,” he said. “We need to have unity, we need to sacrifice, we need to have faith in change. Let us continue the fight,” Davide told hundreds of event participants.

One Billion Rising is a global campaign that aims to end violence against women in human history. It was launched in 2012.

Eve Ensler, founder of the event, appealed for women in the marginalized sectors  to rise against abuse.

“I feel (really) in my heart that the Philippines is one of the most powerful, revolutionary places on this planet,” Ensler said.

“Women are (going to) take back the power in this country and they’ll lead not only the Philippines but the world in a revolutionary direction because this country is so brilliantly organized, so brilliantly together, and all the world can learn from what you are doing here.”

One Billion Rising director, theater actress Monique Wilson said their dream was to have no more advocacy work one day because violence against women and girls has ended.

Wilson, however, said that many laws were passed but there was also an escalation of other forms of violence against women.

Those who attended included those from SIDLAK Gender Resource Center Region 7, Bisdak Pride, Women’s Resource Center of Visayas, National Union of Students of the Philippines, Anakbayan-Cebu, and UP Gender and Development Office.
