SHIFTY guard Terrence Romeo dropped two critical three-pointers late in the game to power the GlobalPort Batang Pier to an 89-85 win over the Barangay Ginebra Kings last night in the 41st PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
By bouncing back from a 98-111 loss to the Mahindra Enforcers last Friday, the Batang Pier kept the Kings winless after two games in the import-flavored tournament.
Ginebra started its campaign with a hotly-contested 112-114 overtime loss to the NLEX Road Warriors last Friday.
Romeo scored 15 points in the first half and his production in the final half were all the Batang Pier needed to escape with the win.
Ginebra wiped out a 15-point deficit and led by four, 81-77, in the closing minutes.
Romeo buried a three-pointer that shoved the Batang Pier within one, 80-81.
Then with GlobalPort trailing, 84-85, Romeo sank another gutsy three-pointer as the Batang Pier took the lead for good, 87-85, with 55.4 seconds left.
Import Brian Williams provided 19 points for GlobalPort while Stanley Pringle and Billy Mamaril chipped in 14 and 12, respectively.
Led by Greg Slaughter’s 20 points, Ginebra had four players scoring in twin digits but its import Othyus Jeffers could only produce eight.
In the other game, the Blackwater Elite continued their dominance over the Mahindra Enforcers via a 110-102 decision.
Reil Cervantes and Carlo Lastimosa combined for 28 of the Elite’s 33-point explosion as they helped their team barge into the win column after losing to an import-less Talk ‘N Text, 102-108, last Wednesday.
Mahindra dropped to 1-1 (win-loss).
