Garbo, former PRO-7 chief, set to retire March 2
Deputy Director General Marcelo Garbo, Philippine National Police deputy director general for administration, bid farewell to the police in Cebu on Tuesday, eight days before his retirement on March 2.
“I just came back to see our people. This is a farewell journey. In eight days I will be retiring. It would be disrespectful for me if would not go back to Cebu,” said Garbo to reporters.
Garbo, who headed the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas for four years, arrived in Cebu on Tuesday morning to give a talk on good governance to about 100 policemen at the Cebu Provincial Police Office in Sudlon, Cebu City.
Garbo said he had been visiting several police units in the country to talk about good governance while at the same time to bid them farewell.
Garbo was PRO-7 chief in December 2012 when then Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia was ordered suspended by Malacanang for usurpation of authority.
Garcia defied order and refused to leave the Capitol.
Garcia, now second district congresswoman, complained to then PNP Chief Allan Purisima that Garbo threatened to remove her by force if she would not leave the capitol.
She also complained the deployment of SWAT team outside the governor’s office where she was holed up.
Garbo told reporters that his stint in Cebu may have been one of the reasons why he was promoted to three-star general.
“I spent four years of my good life as a police officer. Siguro instrumental ang stay ko sa Cebu that is why I was elevated, catapulted to number 2 and a three star (general),” he said.
During his visit in Cebu on Tuesday, reporters received text messages which read:”General Marcelo Garbo who made a big role for the Liberal Party in the 2013 elections by making PNP special forces which are declared illegal by the COMELEC is now roaming around Cebu. For the 2016 election?.”
Garbo dismissed as mere speculations.
“ You know me I don’t play politics, you know me when I was your regional director. Let us not play politics, PNP should not be involved in politics, wala tayong sinisino (we don’t take sides),” said Garbo
