A PHOTO of a two-month-old baby with a swollen body, who later died inside a government-run hospital in Cebu City, became viral on Facebook after a woman, who claimed to be his aunt, posted it online and accused the hospital of alleged negligence.

Princess Jane Cabañez, who claimed to be the aunt of the baby, posted on her Facebook account last Feb. 9 that baby Gelse Bacho was in the hospital for a week, but the doctors at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) could not give any clear medical findings of what was ailing the baby.

“Mao ni kahimtang karon sa akong pag umangkon nga si Gelse Bacho nga 2 months old pa. Naa karon sa Sotto naadmit one week. Wala jud ni gitarong nila kay murag gi practicesan ra nisamot kahupong ang bata pwerting burota unya grabing bun-og kay gapataka lang sila ug taod sa dagom sa injection,”  read her Facebook post.

(This is the situation of my 2-month-old nephew. He has been admitted at Sotto for a week. They didn’t take care of him well. It’s as if they are using him for practice. The baby’s body has become more swollen. There are bruises in parts of his body caused by the improper way they injected on my nephew.)

Cebu Daily News called Nonoy Mongaya, VSMMC information officer,  for comment but he said he could not provide any information on the case since it was a weekend and he was not in his office.

As of 8 p.m. yesterday, the post has generated 2,002 likes and 2,354 shares.

“Daghan na kaayog pasangil sa ilang nakita nga sakit. Una (urinary tract infection), hyponatremia,  karon nasad naa nasay nitubo sa kasing kasing sa bata (There are already different alleged ailments that they diagnosed. First urinary tract infection, next is hyponatremia. Then they say that there’s some growth in the child’s heart),” she added on her Facebook post.

Hyponatremia is a condition that occurs when the sodium levels in the blood is abnormally low.

“Please help kog share kay para mareklamo nani ang hospital ug mga doctors kunohay kay abusado na kaayo ni sila dah! Kusog kaayo mang lookdown ug mga pobre. Di nalang nila tarongon, di kuni pwede palampason nga naay mahitabo sa akong pag umangkon grabi na jud ni sila ,” she said on the closing caption of her Facebook post.

(Please, help share this post so that a complaint will be filed against the hospital and its doctors because they have become insensitive! They always look down on us poor people. They don’t treat us well. I won’t let what happened to my nephew pass.)

Then on Feb. 15, Cabañez posted on her Facebook page a photo of the death tag of the baby.

The death tag showed that Baby Gelse was admitted at 2:21 p.m. of Jan. 27 and died at 8:30 p.m. of Feb. 12.

It also showed that the cause of death was “anemia severe.” She was pronounced dead by a Dr. Dana Tonqueza while the post mortem care was done by a nurse named Jennifer Cutamera.

CDN tried to reach Cabañez through Facebook to ask her what action she and the baby’s family will take, but she also has not responded to the query yet.
