He may be fragile at 79, but Tomas Precillas showed he can still be counted on in times of emergency.

Precillas’s courage saved the lives of his grandchildren. He rescued them from their burning house in Barangay Alang-Alang, Mandaue City yesterday morning.

“I was outside our house when I heard someone shouting that there was fire. I then saw our house already on fire,” said Tomas.

Tomas rushed inside the burning house and rescued his three grandchildren aged five, two and one.

Tomas sustained first degree burns in the face and other parts of the body.

He was brought to Mandaue City Hospital for treatment.

The owner of the house, Expedito Masucol Jr., said he suspected arson.

He said the Precillas couple has not paid the P8,000 monthly rent for the last three months. The couple had signed an agreement that they will  move out once they settle their dues.

But SFO2 Nilo Cosido, arson investigator, said he found no indication that the fire was intentional.

He said electrical short circuit may have caused the fire.

A house owned by Ronnie Rubio was damaged.

The Mandaue City Fire Department received the fire alarm at 9:35 a.m.

The fire was contained at 9:55 a.m.

Damage was estimated at P50,000.

In Lapu-Lapu City, four multicabs caught fire in a garage owned by Editha Casbarian in Barangay Agus.

Casbarian said electrical short circuit may have caused one of the vehicles to catch fire.

Casbarian said they saw that one of the vehicles was on fire at 3:45 a.m.

Casbarian said they tried to douse the fire but it  spread to other vehicles.

Fire fighters arrived and put out the fire at 4:20 a.m. Damage was placed at P200,000.
