ZAMBOANGA Sibugay’s Jose Pague hauled in two titles in the 21st JRG Gullas Cup yesterday at the Consolacion Tennis Club in Barangay Laray, Consolacion town, northern Cebu.

Seeded first in the 16-under division, Pague pulled off a straight-sets victory over second-seed Francis Hidalgo, 7-5, 6-2, to claim the title. Pague didn’t slow down in the 18-under division as the second seed took the crown with a 6-2, 6-3 rout of NJ Enriquez.

Meanwhile, upsets rocked the championship games in other divisions.

In the boys’ 12-under division, second-seed Brent Cortes won the title after scoring an impressive 6-3, 0-6, 10-1 victory over top-seed John David Velez.

Mitch Largo, ranked third in the 10-under unisex division, came from behind to topple second-seed CJ Suson, 4-1, 5-4, 7-5, to be named champion.

Elizabeth Abarquez joined the group of giant-killers as she took the girls’ 16-under after scoring a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory over top seed Patricia Velez.

But Tiffany Nocos made sure she lived up to her lofty billing, as the girls’ 12-under top player scored a 3-6, 6-1, 10-2 win over second-ranked CJ Suson.

Girls’ 14-under top seed Ellaine Bahonsua followed suit as she posted a 6-2, 6-0 rout against Wyne Paglinawan.

In other matches, second-seed Velez beat Nilo Ledama, 1-6, 7-5, 10-7 to secure the boys’ 14-under title while Zethey Mae Alferez topped Abarquez 6-2, 6-4 to bag the girls’ 18-under tiara. /
