THIS early, Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo is already gaining enormous attention with some international and local media comparing him to Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao.
But Michael Aldeguer, CEO of ALA Promotions International, is quick to dismiss the comparison.
“As much as we welcome Sky Sports of Britain, the international, national and local media and the fans in taking notice of Magsayo, we feel that he has not accomplished anything yet and has a long way to go. It is embarrassing to compare Magsayo to Pacquiao as there will never be a Pacquiao in the next 500 years,” said Aldeguer in a press statement.
Aldeguer added, “Magsayo still has so much weakness in his arsenal that needs work in the gym as shown in the (Chris) Avalos fight. It was definitely a tough fight as some boxing experts were against it because of Mark’s inexperience against a veteran warrior who has fought the best, but Mark needed that kind of fight to see if he can go to the next level.”
The 20-year-old Magsayo showed tremendous fighting spirit when he bucked a third-round knockdown to win the WBO international featherweight title against the highly touted Avalos last April 24 at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Magsayo remains unbeaten in 14 fights with 10 knockout victories.
Aldeguer revealed that Magsayo will be sent to the United States on May 31 to train at the famed Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach.
“He is not ready yet; he is far from fighting for a world title. Only time will tell what he can accomplish in the future,” added Aldeguer.
The training abroad is part of Magsayo’s preparation for his next fight on September 24 in Stub Hub Event Center in Los Angeles, California.
