ROOKIE triathlete Chobie Dueñas and teammate Louie Villacin of WS Tri Team humbled their more experienced counterparts in the full distance of the Tabuelan 111 Triathlon yesterday at the Maravilla Beachfront in Tabuelan town, northwest Cebu.

Dueñas, the younger brother of one of Cebu’s top male triathletes, John Philip Dueñas, topped the men’s contest by finishing the race in four hours, 46 minutes and 45 seconds to beat Christopher Rodriguez and Eljan Pelegrino, who settled for second and third places in 5:10.26 and 5:17.01, respectively.

Villacin dominated the women’s contest by besting Rider Omega Pro Tri Team’s Cianyl Jamae Gonzales, who placed second in 6:01.41.

June Marq Ocaña ranked third clocking 6:19.36.

Around 600 triathletes took part in the race organized by the municipality of Tabuelan headed by mayor Rex Gerona.

The event was a tune-up race for some participants who will compete in the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championships slated August 7.
