AFTER a one-year absence, the fund-raising footrace of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and Sorority dubbed “Alphans Run” returns this June 19.
The footrace, which features 4-kilometer, 8k and 16k distances, will start and finish at the Sumilon Road of the Cebu Business Park.
Alpha Sigma Phi decided to hold the race anew to help expand its existing scholarship program. The group first held a running event in 2013.
Alpha Sigma Phi plans to add 10 or more scholars into its program. Also in the pipeline is to take the running event into the national level by encouraging other chapters in the country to stage their own fun runs this December.
“Our counterparts in the US want to fund the program and we want to sustain this by institutionalizing this running event,” Alpha Sigma Phi National President Antonio Tompar said in the launching of the event yesterday at the City Sports Club-Cebu. “This will be our long-term goal to give back to the community. We don’t just recruit members but we want also to reach out to help them become successful in their academics.”
Making sure the running event is safe, Tompar hired veteran race director Joel Baring of Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts (SAFE) to handle the technical side of the race.
Registration is going on at the RUNNR Ayala Center Cebu and at the Mariners’ Court lobby. Registration fee is P350 for the 4k distance, P450 for the 8k and P550 for the 16k.
