CEBU City Mayor Tomas Osmeña and his wife Councilor Margot Osmeña will travel to Japan with their family this week to celebrate their birthdays.
The mayor’s birthday is on July 26 while his wife’s birthday comes a day before, on July 25.
Councilor Osmeña said they will also have a post-birthday celebration for their only granddaughter Anna Margarita Victoria or Anita.
The Osmeña family celebrated Anita’s second birthday with some children at the Parian Drop-In Center last July 20.
“It’s also our anniversary. After all, since last year, we really have not taken a vacation with good friends. It used to be something that we would do before with friends for our birthdays. Now we’re doing it again,” she said.
Margot said they chose Japan because it’s just near and they loved the country. She said she was born in Japan.
The mayor joked that instead of buying a hundred lechon (roasted pigs), he will just take a vacation in Japan instead.
The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) 7 approved the mayor’s vacation in Japan from July 23 to 28.
Mayor Osmeña also filed a leave of absence for his annual medical checkup in Texas for Aug. 4-14.
The mayor was diagnosed with urinary bladder cancer in 2008.
He went to Houston, Texas to undergo surgery and some 40 lymph nodes were removed during the procedure.
In 2012, the mayor was declared cancer-free by his physicians at the M.D. Andersons Cancer Center, where he was treated.
“Four years ago, his check up in Texas was every quarter. And then it became twice a year and just last year, once a year,” Councilor Osmeña said.
Asked if he will appoint Cebu City Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella as acting mayor, the mayor refused to comment.
