New Mandue police chief vows unbiased drug campaign

NEWLY installed Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) director Senior Supt. Roberto Alanas vowed to conduct anti-drug operations based on evidences gathered by the police and “not favor anyone in the fight against illegal drugs.”
Alanas began his work in the city by reassigning policemen linked to the illegal drug trade to other police units as part of “internal cleansing.” Other police officers were also given new assignments to align them with their skills.
A total of 20 policemen were given new assignments.
“The purpose of their realignment does not mean that they are drug protectors, but we just realigned our personnel based on their skills and knowledge that they perform and use their talent,” Alanas said.
In a press conference at the Mandaue City Hall yesterday, Alanas also presented a 10-point agenda as he vowed to go after illegal drug operations and all forms of criminality in the city, fight against corruption within the police office, help ease the traffic problem in Mandaue City, boost their police community relations, upgrade equipment of the MCPO, promote the Women and Children Protection Desk in coordination with the Social Welfare Department, uphold individual human rights, and maintain and uphold the morale and welfare of Mandaue policemen.
For his part, Mandaue Mayor Gabriel Luis Quisumbing assured MCPO of his full support especially on its Oplan Tokhang (Toktok Hangyo, meaning to knock and persuade) that had brought in around 1,500 surrenderers as of Monday.
Quisumbing announced that livelihood programs for the self-confessed drug users and pushers were now underway in Mandaue.
In Cebu City, Mayor Tomas Osmeña announced a plan to assign vehicles to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (CITOM) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
Osmeña said that he specifically wanted to show his support to PDEA since newly installed PDEA Region 7 chief, Yogi Filemon Ruiz is a native of Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City.
Osmeña also promised to release P4,000 monthly allowances to members of PDEA.
