Davao del Norte pug Jerwin Ancajas wins IBF world superflyweight title

Unheralded boxer Jerwin Ancajas from Panabo City, Davao del Norte stunned the boxing world Saturday night when he snatched the IBF world super flyweight title against erstwhile unbeaten Mcjoe Arroyo of Puerto Rico at the Jurado Hall of the Philippine Marine Coprs in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

Ancajas, who now sports a 25-1-1 (win-loss-draw) record with 16 knockout wins, won the 12-round bout via unanimous decision.. The scores were 118-109, 115-112 and 117-110.

The 24-year old Ancajas now joins an elite cast of Filipino world champions in WBO bantamweight king Marlon Tapales, WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr., IBF flyweight champion Johnriel Casimero and WBO light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes.

Ancajas made a big difference in the seventh round when he landed a hard left overhand that sent Arroyo down on the canvas.

Arroyo managed to beat the referee’s count but continued to get tagged with jabs and overhands.

Sensing he was losing the fight, Arroyo slugged it out with Ancajas in the final two rounds but he failed to recover.

Arroyo, who dropped to 17-1-0 with 8 KOs, was best remembered for winning in controversial fashion the superflyweight title against ALA Boxing Gym’s Arthur Villanueva last year in the U.S.

In the undercard, Cebu-based Joey Canoy, also known as Canoy J Singwangcha, prevailed over Toto Landero via a sixth-round knockout.

Canoy improved to 11-2-1 with 5 KOs while Landero dropped to 8-1-2 with 2 KOs.
