35 persons evacuated after Urduja rains cause floods in two north Cebu towns
Thirty five persons or seven families were evacuated in two northern towns in Cebu after rains brought about by tropical storm Urduja cause water levels in these areas to rise.
Five families or 25 persons were evacuated in Barangay Nahus-an in Sogod, a town estimated to be at least 60 km from north of Cebu City, after the Nahus-an river overflowed, said Baltazar Tribunalo Jr., Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) chief, in an interview on Friday.
Tribunalo also said that 10 persons or two families were also evacuated in Barangay Pio of Tabogon, a town estimated to be at least 80 km northeast of Cebu City, after their houses were at risk of being flooded.
Baltazar also said that a portion of a provincial road in Barangay Pio also collapsed due to eroded soil leaving only one lane of the road to be accessible to vehicles.
“We are monitoring and verifying reports from other towns and cities especially those in the river communities.
PDRRMO responders are on standby,” he said.
North Cebu, including Bantayan Island, was placed under Storm Signal No. 1 by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration-Mactan (Pagasa-Mactan) as Urduja is expected to make landfall tomorrow morning.
Pagasa in Mactan also placed the entire province under Yellow Alert wherein rainfall can reach up to 15 millimeters per hour.
